At 18:45:14.829 UTC on 2022-12-08 and Merge block 6,306,357 the Gnosis Beacon Chain unified with Gnosis Chain activating the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism for the network.
The Gnosis Merge replaced the Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus, which was secured by 20 validators, to a far more resilient 100,000 validators supporting the new PoS network. With nodes run by community members and teams around the world, the Gnosis Merge makes Gnosis the second most decentralized PoS network behind Ethereum.
A much wider and geographically dispersed set of validators dramatically improves the censorship resistance and credible neutrality of the network. It also opens up new horizons for Gnosis.
This validator set will secure the bridge between Ethereum and Gnosis Chain using a light client-based bridge. Upgrading the multisig-based approach with a few validators to 512 sampled from the 100k validators running the Gnosis Beacon Chain. This enormously improves the security of our bridges thanks to the zk-proof of consensus.

Additionally, only Gnosis Chain will benefit from Beacon Chain-specific improvements of Ethereum. This includes the highly anticipated EIP-4844 to scale data availability critical for any L2 on top . Few people know that there are already L2s operating on Gnosis today (hello Optimism 😎). Gnosis Chain will be the only other EVM chain apart from Ethereum that will be compatible with this upgrade.
